Mentorship Program

  1. Mentor Program Objectives
    1. To introduce an LNC to a legal practice (in-house setting)
    2. To provide opportunities for practical application of knowledge obtained
        from a already completed LNC program (on-site on-line program)
    3. To gain additional experience and exposure to work on a variety of types
        of cases.
     
  2. Requirements for Participation
    1. Mentee agrees to participate on a pro bono basis during assigned
        mentorship period. Mentor program requires 30-35 hours monthly for
        2-3 consecutive months.
    2. Required qualifications for acceptance into mentor program:
        a. Registered nurse with a minimum of 5 years acute care experience with
            current CA nursing license
        b. Legal Nurse Consultant has successfully completed an LNC or
            equivalent program
        c. Current member in good standing of the San Diego Chapter AALNC
            and National AALNC
        d. Active member: defined as attending 80% of the offered educational
            meetings, member of a committee, and has been a chapter member for
            a minimum of six months prior to submission of application.
        e. Complete Mentor Program application, attach current CV, and submit to
            chapter president or mentor committee chair for approval.
        f.  The mentee is expected to submit an email status report to the chapter
            president or mentor program chair every 2 weeks during mentorship.
        g. Upon program completion, the sponsoring attorney (mentee) will be
            required to complete a brief evaluation as will the mentee.
     
  3. Services and Activities that may be performed by participating LNC mentee:
    (The following list is not all inclusive. Additional tasks can be agreed upon by the mentor/mentee)
  1. Review medical records for merit in a potential medical malpractice case and offer a nursing opinion.
  2. Complete medical record chronologies and/or  summaries
  3. Locate Standards of Care (medical or nursing) applicable to a medical malpractice case
  4. Research medical topics and compile research results in a report or memo
  5. Identify potential defendants in a potential or filed medical malpractice case
  6. Review the Complaint for alleged injuries and substantiate or refute them following medical records review
  7. Attend depositions, summarize deposition transcripts,  or assist with developing questions is preparation for deposition
  8. Interview prospective plaintiffs or participate in an initial meeting between the attorney and prospective plaintiff
  9. Assist with preparation of special interrogatories
  10. Assist in location medical/nursing experts
  11. Observe a jury trial involving medical issues, civil or criminal.  (Not  to exceed four hours of observation time unless otherwise agreed upon with sponsoring attorney)
  12. Observe a Defense medical Exam (DME)
  13. Do background searches on physicians (e.g. www.docboard.co & www.choicetrust.com (nominal charges may apply on the latter)
     
  1. Expectations Post-Mentorship Program
  1. Complete evaluation forms/reports
  2. Share highlights of experience in an article for the chapter newsletter within
    two months of completion.
